Positional Astronomy with Jantar Mantar Instruments

Akshat and Samaira Khandelwal of Grade VIII got an opportunity to attend the “Space and Technology” workshop organized by Space Technology and Education Pvt. Ltd. in collaboration with the American Center. The workshop was held at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi on 18thFebruary, 2025. The topic for the same was “Positional Astronomy with Jantar Mantar Instruments”.

Jantar Mantar observatories constructed by Raja Sawai Jai Singh have been known to be a wonderful teaching laboratory for positional astronomy – a branch of astronomy dealing with measurement of positions of celestial objects.

During the workshop, participants were introduced to the history, significance and instruments at Jantar Mantar. Participants understood how the instruments were used to measure time and to track celestial bodies.Students were given the opportunity to use measuring instruments at the site. They used various models of Jantar Mantar Instruments to perform the observations. The workshop was aimed towards foster a deeper appreciation for the Jantar Mantar and its importance as an observatory which can still be used for taking measurements.
